Our Story

Quicksilver was founded by self-taught silversmith Alby Barratt in 1988. He started his career as a teenager alongside his sister and brother-in-law, making and selling jewellery in Portobello Market, London. After moving to Wales and starting a family, he continued his passion for silversmithing and set up shop in beautiful Laugharne, West Wales. He has been here designing and crafting bespoke jewellery for over 30 years. His designs are instantly recognisable and sought after, not just from a local clientele but customers from all over the world. His knowledge and passion for silver has since been passed to his daughter Rosie Thorne who is continuing to create her Father's classic designs, as well as bringing her own, exciting ideas. We pride ourselves on having a sustainable focus, using only recycled precious metals. Every item is handmade in our workshop and therefore completely unique. We are happy to undertake commissions and repairs.

Laugharne

CARMARTHENSHIRE, WEST WALES.

Laugharne (Welsh: Talacharn) is on the coast, set in a delightful location on the estuary where the River Taf flows into Carmarthen Bay. It ticks all the boxes for a great place to visit. With a magnificent castle, charming town, beautiful walks and so much history. There's lovely places to get a bite to eat and wonderful independent shops.

Laugharne is, perhaps, most famously associated with Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Dylan lived in Laugharne from 1949 until his death in 1953. He once famously described the town as “a timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town”. The Dylan Thomas Boathouse and his writing shed are still there to visit today, as well as his grave at St Martin's Church.

More recently, Laugharne was the prime location for the successful BBC Drama “Keeping Faith”.

Bargain Hunt

We were lucky enough to be featured on the BBC Bargain Hunt TV show in January 2023. This was an amazing experience where we had the chance to showcase our little shop and help Christina Trevanion make a hammered pendant.
