About Us
A traditional family business 🩵
Quicksilver was founded in 1988 by self-taught silversmith Alby Barratt, whose passion for jewellery began as a teenager. He started out alongside his sister and brother-in-law, creating and selling jewellery at Portobello Market in London. After moving to Wales and starting a family, Alby continued to nurture his love for silversmithing, eventually setting up shop in the picturesque town of Laugharne, West Wales. For over 36 years, he’s been designing and crafting bespoke jewellery, creating unique pieces that are loved and sought after by clients both near and far. Alby's passion for silver has since been passed down to his daughter, Rosie Thorne, who not only continues to craft her father's timeless designs but also adds her own fresh and exciting ideas to the collection.

Every piece of our jewellery is lovingly handmade from start to finish in our workshop in Laugharne, making each item truly unique and crafted with care. We take great pride in our sustainable approach, using only recycled precious metals. Our recycled silver (or Ecosilver) is sourced from unwanted jewellery, electronics, medical equipment, and other unused silver products. It holds all the same qualities and properties as traditional sterling silver, but with the added benefit of being an eco-friendly, ethical choice. By avoiding the need for mining, we help protect the planet while ensuring that the quality of our jewellery is just as beautiful and enduring.
We use a full set of hallmarks on most of our items, ensuring that each piece is made from genuine sterling silver. You’ll find the 925 symbol, which confirms the silver’s quality, along with a letter indicating the year it was made, and a panther’s head representing the London Assay Office. Our hallmarks also include the maker's mark - Alby’s personal symbol, A&S, proudly stamped as a mark of quality and craftsmanship.

Laugharne - Carmarthenshire, West Wales
Laugharne (Welsh: Talacharn) is a picturesque coastal gem, nestled on the estuary where the River Taf meets Carmarthen Bay. It’s the perfect spot for a visit, offering a magnificent castle, charming streets, scenic walks, and a rich history to explore. You'll find lovely places to enjoy a meal and delightful independent shops to browse.
Laugharne is perhaps most famously associated with the renowned Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, who lived here from 1949 until his death in 1953. He once described the town as “a timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town,” and his spirit still lingers today. You can visit the iconic Dylan Thomas Boathouse and his writing shed, as well as his grave at St Martin's Church.
More recently, Laugharne also became famous as the setting for the hit BBC drama Keeping Faith, adding to its appeal as a captivating place to visit.

Vanity Fair ⭐
We were incredibly grateful to be asked to be a part of Vanity Fair's Hollywood Issue! Our Stone Hook & Eye Bangle was featured on their Winter Gems page and it was just amazing for our small business to have an opportunity like this.
Bargain Hunt 📺
In January 2023 we had so much fun being a part of BBC Bargain Hunt TV Show. This was an amazing experience for us where we had the chance to showcase our shop and help Christina Trevanion make a hammered pendant.

Awards🏆
During 2024 we were incredibly honoured as a business to be presented with two different awards. This kind of recognition is huge for us and we are so appreciative.
Laugharne and our county mean so much to us that winning Carmarthenshire's Retail Business of the Year was such a proud moment.
At the Guides for Brides Customer Service Awards we came away with Highly Commended which was just amazing as these are a national awards full of incredible businesses from the wedding industry.
